Part P Building Regulations

From 1st January 2005 most electrical work in the home, must by law be notified to the local authority building control. As well as existing electrician who will do this work, other include DIY people and tradesmen who undertake electrical work as part of their normal activities. These can be for example Plumbers, Alarm Installers, Builders, Bathroom Fitters and Kitchen Installers.

The only exception to this rule is where the work has been undertaken by a Competent Part P person who is a member of a Government authorised scheme (Part P Provider). The notification to the local authority is undertaken by the Part P Scheme Provider running the scheme who the Competent Part P person is registered with.

Recognised Part P qualifications for when you register yourself with a Part P Scheme Provider so you're legally able to undertake such work, must include the latest 17th Edition Wiring Regulations City and Guilds 2382-10 or 2382-20, and any one from the following awards
EAL DISQ (Domestic Installer Scheme Qualification)
City and Guilds 2392-10
City and Guilds 2391-10
City and Guilds 2393

City and Guilds have very recently bought out the City and Guilds 2393 award which proves theory understanding of the Building Regulations. For inexperienced people, this 2393 award in conjunction with practical skills, knowledge of Inspecting and Testing ie the 2392 and the 2382 will be sufficient to pass your chosen Part P Scheme Providers Independent Assessment. This assessment is IN ADDITION to passing the course with ourselves and therefore is not part of the course fee. Typically Part P registration is around £300 to £400 per year so you can build in addtional costs to your customers to recover your annual fee.

The 2391-10 award is only to be undertaken for experienced people. Inexperienced people should always take the 2392-10 first.

If you're experienced, to gain your Part P registration you can apply with the 2382 and the 2391awards.

Part P legislation was bought in to provide protection against there being a source of a fire or cause of an injury for electrical installations. To stop "cowboy" traders from operating, all new entrants to the electrical industry as well as existing tradesmen must have recognized qualifications proving their competence.

Our electrical courses will provide you with the competence and confidence to become a Part P qualified Electrician / Installer.
